One of the most common things I hear from couples is, “We are so awkward in photos” or “We never know what to do with our hands.” If that is you, you are not alone. Most of the couples I photograph are not models, and that is actually the best news, because your wedding photos are meant to reflect who you are, not a stiff, staged version of you.

Over the years, after photographing hundreds of weddings across Sydney, the Southern Highlands, the South Coast, and the Hunter Valley, I have developed simple posing techniques that instantly relax couples and bring out their natural chemistry. In this guide, I am going to share three of my go-to hacks so you can look comfortable, connected, and completely yourself in every frame.

Why Posing Matters

Good posing is not about forcing you into unnatural shapes or copying someone else’s Pinterest board. It is about creating a setting where you can interact naturally, then guiding you just enough to ensure the lighting, angles, and composition flatter you. A great pose:

  • Highlights your best features
  • Enhances your connection
  • Works with the light instead of against it
  • Feels comfortable so your expressions are genuine

Tip 1: Movement is Everything

If you hate the idea of posing at all, think of this as guided movement. You will always be doing something, not just standing there smiling at the camera.

Movement creates life in a photograph. When you move, your muscles relax, your posture improves, and your expressions become more genuine. The camera loves movement because it adds energy and emotion.

Examples of Movement Poses

  • Walking Together: Hold hands and walk slowly toward me. Look at each other, talk about something funny, or whisper something cheeky.
  • The Twirl: Perfect for flowy dresses. Hold the skirt lightly and spin, even if it is just a half turn.
  • Pull-In Hugs: One person gently pulls the other in closer. This slight shift creates a sense of connection and intimacy.

Tips for Natural Movement

  • Forget the camera exists for a few seconds.
  • Focus on each other, not me.
  • Keep the movement small and slow so the camera can capture each moment.

Tip 2: Hands Have a Job

Nothing makes people feel more awkward than not knowing what to do with their hands. Idle hands can lead to stiff shoulders and awkward arm positions. Giving your hands a job instantly makes you look more natural.

Go-To Hand Positions

  • Touch Your Partner: Hold hands, wrap your arm around their waist, rest a hand on their chest, or softly hold their face.
  • Hold Something: A bouquet, champagne glass, veil, or jacket.
  • Adjust Something: Smooth your dress, adjust your cufflinks, brush hair away from your face.

Why It Works

When your hands are doing something, your whole body language relaxes. It also creates opportunities for candid, in-between moments that feel unposed.

Tip 3: Create Layers and Connection

Photographs feel more dynamic when there is depth and connection between you. This means avoiding standing straight next to each other with stiff arms, and instead, bringing in natural points of contact.

Layering Tips

  • Stand slightly offset, not shoulder to shoulder.
  • Lean in at different angles, so your heads and bodies are not in the exact same plane.
  • Add points of connection such as holding a waist, touching a shoulder, or resting your forehead on theirs.

Connection Prompts

  • Whisper a funny memory from when you first met.
  • Tell them one thing you love about them in that moment.
  • Share a quiet moment together before looking at the camera.

Common Mistakes Couples Make

  • Overthinking every movement
  • Holding stiff smiles for too long
  • Copying other couples’ poses exactly instead of making them your own

Your goal is to be present with each other and let the photographer worry about the technical side.

Bonus Tips for Looking Effortless

  1. Breathe: Tension shows in your shoulders and jaw.
  2. Check Posture: Imagine a string pulling you gently upward.
  3. Relax Your Face: Think about the person you love instead of the camera.
  4. Trust Your Photographer: If I ask you to do something, it is because I know how it will look on camera.

Why These Tips Work for Every Couple

It does not matter if you think you are awkward, hate photos, or have never been in front of a camera. These techniques work because they are based on how you naturally interact with the person you love. My job is to capture those moments in the most flattering light and angle.

Conclusion

You do not need to be a model to look amazing in your wedding photos. You just need a few simple tools, a photographer you trust, and a willingness to be in the moment. By focusing on movement, giving your hands a job, and creating natural connection, your photos will feel effortless and timeless.
